Your Questions, Answered
How is psychological counseling different from psychotherapy?
These are two distinct paths of professional support. Therapy includes a clinical diagnosis and a treatment plan. Counseling is more individual and addresses personal points of view, feelings and challenges. For example, struggling during fertility treatment is not a clinical disorder but people benefit from counseling a lot. My role is to understand where and how you got stuck and to support you in finding a way forward.
What can I expect during a session?
Sessions are 50 minutes and on Google Meet. I have found Google meet is the video conferencing tool with the best performance even with patchy internet and across devices. If you prefer a different platform, I am open to using it when you provide a link to our session.
There is no script for my sessions. We usually start with what you feel most overwhelmed with on your own and all the approached you’ve tried so far to solve that problem. We look at your options realistically and build a shared understanding how thoughts, feelings, behavioral patterns and sometimes childhood experiences have shaped you. From there we proceed towards a decision, a commitment to change or a commitment to staying how you are and changing the environment.
Is there a set number of sessions I should plan for?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer for this question. Some of my clients already feel better after one session and achieve a lot of change over three sessions. For others, their process is different, longer over several months. Should you ever be in a situation where you have booked sessions you don’t need I allow them to be transferred to a friend of yours.
How much is the counseling?
Check out my Rates subpage. I have a large discount for 10-session packages.
Will my health insurance cover the sessions?
Most likely not, as what I offer is counseling and coaching and not therapy. Also, because it is an incredible amount of administrative overhead I do not offer direct insurance billing. If you live in Germany and are looking for psychotherapy covered by your statutory health insurance, please refer to the search function of the Kassenärtzliche Vereinigung of your state (Bundesland). For Hessen, for example that’s www.kv-hessen.de.
Do you work with couples as well?
Yes, and couples counseling can involve individual sessions between sessions with the three of us. I don’t prescribe a pattern and plan the sessions depending on where you are in the process and what you are working on.
I am struggling with fertility -- can you help?
Fertility counseling is one of the areas closest to my heart. Check out my TEDTalk on how I became an expert in this field. I work with Singles and couples independently of the country of treatment and the treatment itself. Contrary wo what other internet sources may claim: counseling does not improve the probability to become pregnant. But what it can do is keep your mental health intact so that you have the strength for treatment or the strength to create a new life path for yourself should you not become a parent.
Everything happens online – how does that work?
During my clinical training I experienced all the hurdles of the logistics it takes to travel to a physical space. I lived close to the treatment facility, but my patients had often put off seeking treatment for months because they couldn’t manage the weekly appointments. I do believe that meeting in person in a physical space has different qualities than an online meeting. However, if that leads to putting off getting help it’s usually not a good deal. When you have the realization that you are stuck it makes sense to start counseling right away.
How do you handle privacy and confidentiality?
I am a licensed therapist in Germany, and I apply the same confidentiality to my counseling that I was trained to provide for therapy.

I am a leader or professional -- do you offer coaching too?
I’m an entrepreneur – what is different in that coaching? Entrepreneurs often work 24/7 and separation of work-life and personal life typically doesn’t really work like it works for people with a salaried position. Also risk and responsibility are often more intense than in other work settings. Lastly, an entrepreneur is usually limited in who they can tell about the inner workings of their business and counseling offers confidentiality that friends or business contacts cannot offer.
